Abstract

This study explores the gendered ideology in the typical character reports on People’s Daily. The data collected are from the front page of People’s Daily published from1997 to 2006. A content analysis is designed first to find out the roles of females and males in the reports. Then the approach of critical discourse analysis is adopted here with the aim of revealing the power relations and gender ideology hidden in the news articles. In the quantitative analysis, two research questions were asked about the roles of the characters and the ideology laden in the reports. And seven variables are developed to find out whether there is prejudice against women. The results of the statistic figures show that traditional role of females at home was to some extent stressed in the typical character reports. The reports pictured a group of weak and powerless women, giving a distorted depiction on Chinese women. In the ideological analysis of the reports, the social context is first examined to present women’s social and political status in China. Then in the discursive analysis, five features of the news texts were explored to manifest the linguistic features of the news text. The five features include attribution, polarization, narrative structure, lexical style, and metaphor. Then the results are interpreted from the critical perspective. The results show the immense power of the entrenched traditional gender ideology and the role of the typical character reports in reproducing and perpetuating the traditional gender ideology. In conclusion, the typical character reports gave a biased portray of women as subordination to men and as the powerless group in the society while men are pictured as the powerful ruling class. Meanwhile, in some cases the value of women is measured by male criteria, which indicates a masculine-oriented inclination in the news reports.
