Abstract


Iris Murdoch is one of the prolific writers which are rare in contemporary British. She created twenty-six novels, six books about philosophy, five plays, a volume of poetry and numerous essays about literary during over thirty years. Her novels are unique for their profound thinking and special writing skill, and she has won many prizes. The Sea The Sea brought her the Booker Prize in 1978.This paper is about to explore the subject of freedom expressed in Iris Murdoch’s The Sea The Sea. It includes introduction, conclusion and three chapters. The introduction includes the author’s life background, the brief plot of The Sea The Sea, the international and domestic literature reviews of this novel, and Murdoch’s opinion of freedom. The first chapter depicts the dilemma of human life that everyone in this novel is entangled in his own ego world. It is difficult to communicate and exchange opinion with others. When their ego world conflicts with the object real world, these trapped people realize they should get rid of this stated of being entangled and begin to pursuit their freedom. The second chapter analyses the reasons that everybody is not free. Iris Murdoch depicts how the real objective world is distorted by individual’s subjective intention. These characters, driven by their own emotion, imagine a fantasy world belonging to them and entangle themselves within the prison of ego. It is because everyone is controlled by the demon in his heart that he cannot understand the objective world correctly and achieve normal communication with others. The third chapter gives a detailed explanation about how the characters obtain their freedom. They break through the limitation of ego by others’ help and self reflection. Under the guidance of mind which is absolute free, human being can obtain relative freedom in action.As the ending part, the conclusion includes how Iris Murdoch shows her thoughts in this novel about how the human beings achieve their freedom, and how her views about freedom enlighten the contemporary people. Actually, Iris Murdoch, who is a famous writer and a serious philosopher, discusses a philosophy issue with a form of literature: what is freedom and how to achieve it. This novel explains Iris Murdoch’s opinions about freedom, that is, the contemporary people should awaken from the state of bound spirit, breaking through the fence made by themselves, and carrying through a real freedom completely.
