Katherine Mansfield is one of the most famous women writers in the twentieth century English literature. She has really contributed a lot to the English literature, especially the development of the short stories. This thesis intends to reveal the existential plight of Victorian women in Mansfield’s novel, through choosing the young and middle-aged women as the research object and contact with the author’s social background. In order to reveal the plight around the woman in the Victorian, I try to divide the women of the novel into three types, that is, single girls, housewives and old maid. From this, we can comprehend the tragedy and feminism in Mansfield’s novel. The first part of the thesis is introduction. In this part I give an outline of Mansfield’s experience of life. Because these experiences have a deep affect on Mansfield’s writing.
