Abstract

Based on the literature review and the results of the interview, the author of this study explored the concept, structural construction and measuring tool of college studentsspirituality; and making using of the self-compiled spiritual questionnaire, the author surveyed the status quo of college students’spirituality, and discussed its relationship with self-consistency. The main results present as follows:(1) Spirituality, rooted in the personality of the individual, is an experiential attitude and sense of unity related to life itself, society and the transcendent existence. It comprises five dimensions:the sense of meaning of life; an experience of transcendence; love and sympathy; enjoyment in life; and sense of belonging.(2) The self-compiled Spirituality Questionnaire for College Students consists of five dimensions,21 items altogether. The reliability and validity are fine.(3) Using the self-compiled Spirituality Questionnaire for College Students, the author surveyed 566 college students; the results show that the whole level of college students’spirituality is higher than the medium. Except "experience of transcendence"(a bit lower than medium), other four dimensions of spirituality are higher than the medium as well. There are significant differences of total spirituality level between majors, genders and different family residences. However, no significant differences are found between grades, whether being the only child or not, and whether believing in religion or not.(4) The whole level of college students’self-consistency and those of its dimensions are higher than medium. There are significant differences of total self-consistency level between grades, genders and majors. However, no significant differences are found between different family residences, whether being the only child or not, and whether believing in religion or not.(5) There are found significant relationship between the total scores of spirituality and self-consistency, and with their dimensions as well. This result proves that there surely is close relationship between these two variables. Through the step regression analysis, the author found that five dimensions of spirituality are all valid predictive variables to self-consistency, and they can altogether explain 35.1% of the variance of self-consistency. Above results confirm that there are not only theoretic, but also empirical relations between college students’spirituality and self-consistency.
