Abstract


The psychoanalytic criticism of the Eden Mythology, a prominent Biblical conceptual image, hasbeen developing over such a historical span over a century, thus enjoys a significant position in theperspective of Biblical studies in the West, exerting dramatic impact over the world. Nonetheless,knowledge and information in this country, where the said psychoanalytic criticism is concerned, remainsfairly limited for long, and applications of theorem of this nature is accordingly elementary. It is because ofthe above-mentioned situation that the authoress intends to provide a fuller view of its past and present andeven probe into the vista of future, and together with her individual comprehensions which dominates thewhole process of selection, categorization and theorization, commentaries and evaluations have beenoffered.This dissertation starts with painting the backdrop of the Oedipus Pattern in Eden Mythology,together with a brief description of multifarious responses to such a topic of scholarship. Examined are acouple of major themes of Oedipus Complexes: maternal incest and patricide, and also revealed is therelation between Eden myth and Oedipus complex in modern senses.Further on is the theory of consciousness by Carl Jung who regards Eden as a symbol of thehuman consciousness as a whole, followed by the illustrative analyses of the symbolic meanings of Edenby Jacoby and Edinger and so on: Those symbols reflect the formation and development of humanconsciousness, and divulge human fantasies and the idea of the pre-destiny in terms of love and marriage,and so forth.Even later on introduced is Moshe Halevi Spero, as well as Lyn M. Bechtel. Spero employsLacanian theory to dug the same theme whereas Bechtel endeavors to demonstrate the major steps of an individual growth: Infancy, Child and Teenager..It is concluded that not only has Psychoanalytic criticisms of Eden Mythology has enriched theprevious psychological approaches with fresh theorems and theses, but also expanded the perspective ofthis research with new topics and renewed themes. Psychoanalytic Criticisms of Eden Mythology haspromoted interpretation of the Bible and also contributed to Anthropology in and beyond the sense of thisregard.
