Abstract


As a Chinese language culture promotion agency, Confucius Institute is a new form of cultural diplomacy and a new exercise of public diplomacy, which is in use to improve the China’s soft power. It shoulders the responsibility of spreading Chinese language culture, offering a new view for the other countries’ public to know more about China, and enhancing China national image.From the perspective of foreign media reports, the international mainstream media pay extreme attention to Confucius institute increasingly. The establishment of Confucius Institute means China’s soft power is in ascension. It is an understandable way to improve China’s image.And local media with most friendly attitude take the main role of reporting the Institutes’initial operations. Based on the case analysis on the coverage about the Confucius Institute operation from the foreign media, it could be found that there are both positive and negative evaluations. On one hand, the ascension of China’s political, economic and military strength makes Confucius Institute more and more popular. Meanwhile it can be seen as a bridge between China and other countries; On the other hand, the media are questioning whether Confucius Institute is the Chinese government’s foreign propaganda tool, which will threaten the university’s academic freedom and independence.According to the analysis of the coverage’s content and attitude,this thesis argues that the Institute’s targets have be realized partly, and have made many achievements in the early days. At the same time, I think in the further development, the Confucius Institute requires to operate less officially and more non-governmentally. We should introduce both traditional Chinese culture and contemporary China to the world by multi-media types, which also can construct beneficial overseas public opinion environment for the development of China.
