Abstract


China is an oriental country with a long history and an ancient civilization, which boasts of its splendid culture and abundant tourist resources. With the rapid development of Chinese economy and the arrival of the time of international tourism, more and more foreign visitors are coming or planning to come to travel in China. They are trying to understand the unique traditional Chinese culture, modern changes and development, and tourist resources in China mainly through reading or referring to various Chinese tourist materials, so the translation of Chinese tourist materials has become increasingly important and the improvement of its quality has been attracting more and more attention from the Chinese government as well as tourist agencies and translators. However, in today’s Chinese translation of English tourist materials, bad or inappropriate translations can be found everywhere, which have been affected and will surely continue to affect, to varying degrees, foreigners’general understanding of China and the development of tourist industry in China. Therefore, how to translate well so as to truthfully and effectively introduce the unique Chinese tourist resources and culture to foreign visitors is an important task of the Chinese translators.This thesis attempts to explore some of the effective ways of translating Chinese tourist materials into English from the perspective of intertextuality. We will first examine the intertextual nature of the Chinese tourist materials and then analyze the problems existing in the translation of these materials and finally put forward some strategies to cope with those problems so as to improve the translation of the Chinese tourist materials. The thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction giving the rationale, purpose and significance of the study. Chapter two reviews the intertextuality theory and analyzes the relationship between intertextuality and translation. It points out that translation itself is an intertextual activity. Chapter three introduces tourist materials and its translation elaborating on the existing problems in the translation of tourist materials. Chapter four first argues for the guiding role of the theories of intertextuality in the translation of Chinese tourist materials pointing out that the translators’intertextual awareness often has great influence on the translation quality. And then it discusses the manifestations of intertextuality in tourist materials from the perspective of specific and generic intertextuality. This chapter finally comes up with some specific translation strategies for the Chinese tourist materials from the point of intertextuality. Chapter five draws the conclusion that the intertextuality theory provides a new approach to the translation studies of tourist materials. The translator’s sufficient intertextual knowledge plays an important role in improving the quality of translation. It helps to promote the exchange of Chinese and western culture and the development of tourism in China.
