Abstract


Since the later stage of Qing Dynasty, Chinese society has undergone tremendous changes. Western culture was introduced to every single corner across China. Especially in the1920s and1930s, various ideologies took root and spread on this ancient land. Modern imageries such as coffee, movies, fashions flooded began to show their presence in big cities, especially Shanghai, which was known as "the capital of fashions". With the flourished community and economy, Shanghai was praised as the "Paris of the East". Shanghai’s rapid development was recorded in newspapers, magazines and other media."The Culture Art Review" had a very high power of influence at that time, its circulation and number of audience is second only to "LiangYou". An advertisement in "Shanghai Daily" published in September1930considered it as "the most valuable literary magazine in China". What’s more,"The Culture Art Review" helped a lot of artists with its own influence, by introducing their works from the world of pure art to commercialization. The publisher, editor and guest writers of "The Culture Art Review" are all renowned artists inside their own fields.This article consists of three chapters. The first chapter will investigate the life of the "Liang Family" members as well as explore their artistic achievements. The second chapter will talk about editors and writers of "The Culture Art Review". Analysis on how the artist group behind editorial team, especially Tianhua Art Association, exhibition tours and other arts education institutions, affected the style of this magazine. Contributions of text editor Zhang Yi’an, platemaking directior Lu wenBo and female artist will also be unveiled. Chapter3will focus on the works published in "The Culture Art Review", conducting both qualitative and quantitative research, to estimate the artistic value of these works and deliver an overview of the cultural background, to the best of the author’s knowledge.
