Abstract


Audiovisual translation which is closely related with cultures does not receive enough attention in China. Surveying the present situation of audiovisual translation in China, especially subtitle translation, we may find that excellent translation and inferior translation intermingle due to the lack of systematic translation theories. Relevance Theory which is proposed by Sperber and Wilson in 1986 claims that communication is an ostensive-inferential process involving informative intention and communicative intention and introduces the new angle of pragmatics and cognition into the study of translation. The main task of the subtitler is to find the optimal relevance to the source text in order that the audience can acquire adequate contextual effects with the least information-processing effort.Based on Relevance Theory, Gutt proposed the Relevance Translation Theory which emphasizes the cognition of relevance can improve text quality by analyzing the similarity of versions and source text under the relevant context. The people with different attitudes and senses can share the thoughts expressed in the original works and the feelings of their authors.This thesis presents a case study of Chinese subtitling of a famous American sitcom Friends, focusing on the translation of idioms within the framework of Relevance Theory. It is a tentative exploration of proving the influence on translation and practice from the viewpoint of Relevance Theory. This thesis investigates the principle and method of mutual relevance, and provides a new theoretic perspective for idioms translation of subtitling.Chapter one reviews the studies of Friends from media and academia, and introduces main research issues to be discussed in the thesis. Chapter two elaborates on the basic theoretic foundation and the adequacy of applying in translation. Chapter three probes into the features of subtitling and illustrates the reflection of relevance and optimal relevance in subtitling translation. Chapter four is research on the definition and features of idiom and comparative translations in the light of general translation theory and relevance transition theory in order to emphasize the relevance theory’s guidance on idiom translation. Chapter five analyzes the idioms translation in Friends based on Relevance Theory from literal, liberal, loan and omission translation. It proves that idioms translation can be found the necessity of“relevance”during the fortuity of“irrelevant”. The communicative principle of relevance plays an essential role in guiding the process of translation.Through studying and demonstrating, researches of this thesis are of great theoretical and practical significance for idioms translation from the perspective of Relevance Theory.
