Abstract


Grammar is the core element of language. The concept of grammar has changed over time. However, the status of grammar experienced a period of fluctuation in language teaching. Both in China and abroad the role of grammar has experienced the process of being valued, being neglected, and being re-valued. In China the New English Curriculum for General Senior High Schools gives the latest view of the relationship between grammar and linguistic competence, that is, grammar should be taught by teachers, the key point is how to teach grammar. Many experts focus on the research of grammar teaching methods and learning strategies aiming to find out an effective way for teachers and learners. There are still few studies to investigate the real situation in grammar teaching. Under such circumstance, the author carried out a study about the general situation of grammar teaching in Tianjin.The main research questions in this study are as follows:1. What are the general methods of grammar teaching adopted by English teachers in senior high at present?2. How do students react to the grammar teaching methods applied by teachers in senior high at present?3. What is the general situation of grammar learning in senior high at present?The subjects of this study include240students and sixteen English teachers. They come from three senior high schools of Grade Two in Tianjin. They are municipal key school, district key school and average school respectively, so the three schools show the common situation of senior high schools in Tianjin. The questionnaire and interview are used to conduct the investigation. The results indicate that:Most teachers prefer deductive way to teach grammar. Grammar-translation method is still the mainstream in senior high school at present; The majority of students show negative attitude towards grammar in classroom teaching at present. There are only about one-third students holding the positive attitude towards teaching results of grammar. However, from the interview, almost all the teachers think that their ways of teaching grammar have achieved good results. Only19.8%of the students master well in grammar. Students prefer the traditional grammar learning methods after class.69.4%of the students think that they feel confused with some grammar knowledge in the grammar system and usually make errors.12.9%of the students find it hard to understand the grammar system.
