Abstract


Subtitles as a special kind of text , translated the importance of international exchanges become more frequent with the film culture fade . As the subtitle translation is the translation of a restricted , that is , the source language and the target language are subject to the constraints of space and time , and literary translation has its own significant features on the choice of translation strategies . Frequent use less translation strategy is one of the characteristics of subtitle translation , the reason can be obtained from Nida's functional equivalence theory explanation. According to the principle of functional equivalence , translation ( including movie subtitle translation ) ideal goal is to make the target language audience get approximately the same feeling with the primitive audience . The only way due to the existence of time and space constraints , the subtitles asked the audience within a limited time and space to pass the necessary information at the same time , the subtitles are not the audience access to information , images, sounds , and actions are an important channel for audience movies , which makes less translation strategy is not only feasible but also necessary in the subtitle translation , the purpose is to let the audience get approximately the same feelings in order to achieve functional equivalence . This article by three Chinese Movie English Subtitles case analysis reveals the effect of translation reduction strategies in the subtitle translation can be utilized to achieve functional equivalence . This paper describes three methods subtitle translation reduction according to the different extent of the original deletion : compression, selective abridged and delete . But in fact there is no clear distinction between the three methods , and in the practice of translation is often based on two or three combined . This article also pointed out that the less translation does not mean that the translator can freely deletion , use less translation method must comply with the principle of operation of the association .
