Abstract


University’s public image is the unity of its intrinsic spirit and extrinsic characters. The management of university’s public image is strategically important for the long-term survival and development of the school. This article defines the connotation of university’s public image from the very beginning, including its definition, classification, constituent elements and the function and significance of a favorable public image of the university. Because the study on university’s public image is comparatively novel and involves many subjects, thus the writer sorts out the theoretical basis of it, consisting of public relationship theory, marketing theory, consumer theory and organizational culture theory. Next is the most important part of this article, namely the overall process of the management of university’s public image, involving the positioning phase, shaping phase, dissemination phase, feedback and adjustment phase, maintenance phase and promotion phase. Among them, the shaping phase utilizes the CIS (Corporate Identity System) theory, which can be divided into the mind identity system, behavior identity system and visual identity system. Base on the links mentioned above, the university’s public image needs further promotion to get the competitive advantage sustainably. After the elaboration of the whole process of the management of university’s public image, writer analyses the problem of the image management existing in the universities nowadays, and proposes some Countermeasures for it, including establishing a correct understanding, highlighting the school’s distinguishing features, enhancing the internal strength, and properly handling the public relationship, hoping to provide some references to the theoretical construction and the practical operation of the management of university’s public image.
