China’s higher education has seen 30 years of development since reform and opening-up. Both authorities and teams for study soar in the 30 years, so do the study achievements. Faced with increasing studies, it becomes necessary for us to know how to review our study more rationally based on past studies, especially recognize the limitations and shortcomings of our present study from the international perspective so as to promote benign development of China’s higher education study. A review of papers subjects in Journal of Higher Education facilitates making clear of subject evolution characteristics, problems and shortcomings, and summarizing and analyzing the future development trend of study subjects so that thoughts can be arranged orderly for study. This is of certain theoretical study and practical guidance significance.This paper consists of three chapters. Chapter one mainly describes background, significance, literature review and design of the study; chapter two presents statistical results according to the analysis framework of the author; chapter three discusses and analyzes the results. Comparison is made against statistical study of Malcolm Tight, and subject evolution characteristics, existing problems and future trend are mainly discussed.According to the statistics, ClassⅡstudy subjects ranking top ten are:structure and development strategy, curriculum and instruction, foreign higher education study, student, higher education and society, higher education ideas, organization and management, higher education chronicle, strategic planning of school/institutional study and human resources of school. Top five ClassⅡsubjects with the fastest rise speed are structure and development strategy, foreign higher education study, study on student, study on human resources of school, and study on higher education and society. The study on curriculum and instruction has been the focus in the higher education study. While, the study on structure and development strategy, foreign higher education, student, human resources of school, and higher education and society are increasingly popular in the 21st century. Top ten ClassⅢsubjects in China’s higher education study in recent ten years are higher education and economy, history and current situation of foreign higher education, basic theory of curriculum and instruction, higher education hierarchy, higher education theory system and pedagogic construction, higher education and human, moral and aesthetic education, higher education thought history, modern higher education history, and instruction model and reform. There are two evolution laws of China’s higher education study subjects:1. Subjects change with different social and era backgrounds at home and abroad; 2. the hotspot in the study changes as that of key points of international higher education reform and practice. According to the subjects of papers in Journal of Higher Education from 2000 to 2009, there exist two problems:academic fashion-following and short-sightedness. The future study on higher education in China will be characterized by the followings:Macro study will decrease, and meso and micro study will take the lead in development. Specifically, curriculum and instruction remains the focus of the study, and will shift to micro deepening; policy analysis and institutional as meso study will see a considerable development; the studies on academic profession and student development will emerge and develops vigorously.
