Abstract


Music and literature, as two different artistic styles, each has its unique manifestation of art and artistic law. But they have the same aesthetic aim and the similar means of expressing feeling.Music is important to both Murakami’s life and his novel writing. Murakami has made some researches on music, especially jazz. In his works, Murakami combines music with literature, the flavor of jazz penetrating into his novel. His novel therefore has a color of jazz.Murakami always uses the title of music to name his novel. A lot of jazz music being set as the background music of his novel, Murakami depicts that the mentally depressing urban youth has made their efforts to find their lost spirits, demonstrating their complex feelings and attitudes towards life. Meanwhile, Murakami focuses on the identity of music emotion and novel emotion. For a closely combination of music and the plot, according to different situations, Murakami sets different jazz music, and therefore the emotions of characters change with notes, showing a smooth transition from gay to depression.Jazz has its specific character. Together with the carrier of jazz, Murakami’s novel writing contributes to the development of literature. The changing of music emotion and rhythm changes render out two worlds, the real world and a virtual world, reflecting he the two sides of the real world, realistic and non-realistic. Murakami is adept in representing the real world with the virtual world, creating a vivid fictional world and lively characters, which is a particular character of his novel enjoyed by the reader.Murakami absorbs the skills of the creation and performance of jazz into his novel writing. Music is based on imitation, symbolization, implication, and expression. Murakami He employs the techniques and approaches of jazz, such as, repeat and impromptu, to coordinate the plot and structure of his novel and set up an appropriate novel context, creating an extemporaneous effect, which forms the unique form of his novel.Music is not the simple decoration of Murakami’s novel, but the best way to reach the deep consciousness of his novel. Based on the identity of literature and music, Murakami skillfully combines music into the novel, and therefore the characters has a jazz spirit. This special way of demonstrating the society and characters musicalizes the novel. Based on the identity of literature and music, from interdisciplinary perspective, this thesis makes a tentative analysis of musical characteristic of Murakami’s works, and from the perspective of aesthetics, the perfect combination of literature and music is also analyzed.
