Abstract


The thesis probes into the cross-cultural awareness in website translation. It comments on the present views on website translation in China. Many hold that the articles in Chinese websites should be changed to satisfy the taste of westerners. However, as China gets stronger in the world, China English gains more acceptance and popularity. The thesis argues that in website translation, China English should get its due place and can be used in Chinese websites appropriately so as to introduce Chinese culture to the outside world. It also offers some suggestions for the teaching of translation.The first chapter is the literature review of website translation and China English. Most researches focus on cross-cultural awareness in website translation. According to them, the source text is supposed to cater to English culture and words and expressions with Chinese characteristics should be avoided. They even suspect that China English is not a variety of English. It is pointed out that this is not true. China English is in fact increasingly popular both at home and abroad with the growing power of China.The second chapter deals with cross-cultural awareness in website translation. It dwells upon the importance of cross-cultural awareness and peaceful coexistence at linguistic and cultural levels. In website translation, it is beneficial to let target readers know the intention of the source text as well as to present the uniqueness of the source language culture.The third chapter discusses China English and website translation. It begins with a brief introduction to China English from the perspectives of history, future, and the comparison with Chinglish. This is then followed by an introduction of Singapore English in terms of historical background and linguistic traditions, etc. Besides, economic influence and globalization are discussed.The last chapter offers some suggestions for the teaching of translation regarding China English and website translation. It first introduces a relevant translation theory, i.e. Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation. Then it gives some suggestions for the teaching of Chinese-English translation.The appendix following the conclusion provides a few examples from the Internet about Chinglish and China English.
