Abstract


The past few decades have witnessed an ever opening China to the outside world thanks to the introduction and implementation of the policy of reform and opening-up. Each year, millions of foreigners come to China to experience the life and culture of this oriental country. As a widely-spoken language, English can be seen and read in almost everywhere in China. It not only provides convenience for foreign visitors, but also reveals overall development of the country.Xi’an will host the International Horticultural Exposition in the year 2011. It is such a grand exposition that will definitely attract millions of foreign visitors. To ensure smooth operation of the exposition and bring convenience for foreign visitors, Xi’an municipal government has made great efforts in improving translation quality of public signs. However, many errors still exist in the present bilingual public signs, and how to correct these translation errors and avoid making mistakes in future translation is a serious problem.In this paper, the author implements a qualitative and quantitative analysis on the status of public sign translation in Xi’an from the perspective of functionalistic theories. Firstly, the paper demonstrates status of public sign translation research, and reviews former relevant researches. Secondly, the paper introduces features and functions of public signs, and suggests that functionalistic theories could be adopted in the translation process of public signs. The paper ends, based on a case study and some translation strategies, introduces construction of criteria on public sign translation in Xi’an. The author hopes that the research is of academic value and can be used for references by relevant practitioners, including researchers, government departments concerned, translators, and signboard manufacturers.
