Abstract


In 20th century, ugliness crashed into people’s vision that had got used to the beauty. It broke the tendency of the people’s taste on beauty. And the rising of the ugliness ostensibly make the art plump in the time to appreciate on it. In fact, ugliness was born together with beauty on the beginning of human perceptual activity which also took part in the whole process of the development of perception. During this period, ugliness developed gradually from the edge to the centre which got its splendor and been deeply attention on the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. But in the studies of ugliness in the past, people mostly regard the ugliness as the foil of beauty that it did not obtain its independent perceptual valve and just served as the contrast to beauty. The thing we should know is that ugliness has its own artistic features from the first beginning. And this kind of negative critical character make the ugliness have its unique artistic value which not only just serve as the foil to beauty. The distinct artistic features of ugliness let people has the possibility to appreciate the ugliness. And the demands of the appreciation make it necessary for people to express ugliness. Meanwhile, people should see that the pleasure of the appreciation of ugliness is different from the aesthetic pleasure. This kind of pleasure is not just as simple as by depreciating the ugliness which in order to raise beauty. The reason is that the appreciations of ugliness in writings fulfill people’s emotional needs and arose the resonance which let the reader obtain the pleasure on doing the reading. Since ugliness has its own special value all along, why it show its charm till modern times? Why people regard the modern literature as the art of ugliness? Why till now the ugliness could be an independent subject? Beside all of these, there not only have profound social background reasons but also have some close relationships with the art itself and the background of philosophy. Besides, people can see that the grow up of the subject of ugliness has brought the new inspiration which got new meaning.
