Abstract


In the history of modern Chinese culture and spirit, Su Manshu and Li Shutong are the mirrors as well as the symbols of modern literati sentiments. Their thoughts, words and deeds provides a typical and rare specimens for the integration of Modern Chinese and Western cultures and the great change of psychological structure of ethnic culture we have been studying. They left the opening and endless imaginary space. Their complicated spirit threw off such imprecise images that they often become the puzzling mystery. Su Manshu and Li Shutong opened the richness of history and showed the complexity and paradox at the turning point in the course of our history for us. Through listening to their reverse inquiries to the history and exploiting the cultural resources they had left, We saw the colorful, mysterious and wonderful historical features. However, at the level of culture, whether praised or denied, misread or restored, in fact, in the modern trip of Chinese spirit, so far people are still unable to avoid their value confusion they ever experienced. That is the fate of modern Chinese literary figures trapped in the tunnel of long history. Their struggles between to and from worldly affairs, loving and loveless, traditional and modern penetrate time and space of the history to become a kind of the basic perspective of national and individual survival. At last, through the analysis of the works, their conciousness of tragedy is presented by the reasons formed in the development especially childhood experienceThis paper mainly examines the cultural structure, and the effect which culture, especially the traditional chinese cutlure, caused to their development. The paper discusses two points of the cultural and social character: Rise of the famous romantic feelings and Confucianism. Also from the internal and external cause, the paper seeks reasons for their birth, proofs that birth is the important way for them resisting to suffering, desperation and self-salvation, and analyzes different motivations and consequences of thier birth.This paper compares the mysterious lives of Su Manshu and Li Shutong, attempts to analyze their similarities and differences by comparing their cultural character, social character as well as the out-of-the-world and tragic sense and to pursue their cultural significance and inspiration to contemporary culture.
