Abstract


Jiang Kui is one of the important phrase writers in Southern Song Dynasty.When he was young he was known for poetry and phrases. Besides, he was also a mastered in temperament, with the ability to compose new melody. He has chosen to live his life totally away from the civil service of the Southern Song government, and mare a live from his phrases. According to commentators, he has done better in his phrase writing as compared to his poems. This thesis is based on the reading of Jiang Kui’s works and other related materials, attempted to analyses his life, personality, emotion and language style. The first chapter seeks to discuss the life of Jiang Kui, his personality. The description on his life will concentrate on two parts namely his life encounters and the lack of a permanent residence. An analysis is done on Jiang Kui’s personality based on the historical cultural, religious background during the material time. The second chapter will discuss Jiang Kui’s emotion through his patriotic love and his love for Hefei. The last chapter attempted to analyses Jiang Kui’s language style through his use of words, choice of words and the introduction of Tang poems into his phrase. As compared to other phrase writers, Jiang Kui created a more eighty over works. However, his personality, emotional involution and language style enabled him to find a place during the Southern Song dynasty.
