A Corpus-based Study on TEM-8 Chinese-English Translation Errors

Abstract


Errors are inevitable in the process of second language acquisition. The analysis of second language learners’errors not only provides evidence of the process of second language acquisition but also helps language teachers and researchers know about the learners’learning strategies. But few empirical researches are about students’translation errors, let alone those of the C-E translation section of TEM-8. According to the previous researches, translation errors are classified into grammatical errors, infelicity uses, under-translation, over-translation and mistranslation. Based on Error Analysis (EA) and Corpus-based Error Analysis (CEA), this study attempts to make an empirical study of translation errors, and proposes to address the following four research questions:1) What is the distribution of the translation errors?2) What are the predicting powers of those translation errors to translation scores?3) How many dimensions do those translation errors display?4) Do the translation errors differ in the high proficiency group (HPG) and the low proficiency group (LPG)?To answer the four questions, 221 English juniors from South-Central University for Nationalities and Hubei University of Education were invited to participate in the study. The corpus linguistic software AntConc and the statistical analysis software PASW Statistics 17.0 are used for statistical analysis. The research has found out that infelicity uses are the most common translation errors of all the errors, followed by grammatical errors, over-translation, under-translation, and mistranslation. Under-translation, grammatical errors and over-translation are among the most powerful predictors. But infelicity uses and mistranslation do not have significant predicting powers to translation scores. The differences of grammatical errors, under-translation and over-translation between the HPG and the LPG have reached the significant level (p<.05), but the differences of infelicity uses and mistranslation between the HPG and the LPG have not reached the significant level (p< .05).It is expected that the research of students’TEM-8 C-E translation errors would be helpful in presenting a whole picture of students’translation errors to language and translation teachers and that the empirical approach to studying students’errors in C-E translation in TEM-8 used in this research could serve as a reference for future researches on translation errors.
