Abstract


Characterized by its exponential updating speed and prevailing predominance in people’s daily life, IT document translation distinguishes itself by its demanding and challenging nature in technical translation. Since not only a good command of both source and target languages, but also a certain degree familiarity of basic IT operation principles are required while translating IT documents, the task is not easy for non-specialists.Along with the development of China’s, large quantities of IT documents are expected to be translated, both from foreign languages to Chinese and from Chinese to foreign languages. In order to accurately translate IT documents by hand,the need of high quality translation aiding tools are increased, among which, specialized and parallel corpora have been noticed for its specialty and modernity to people who are doing technical translations.Although large-scale corpora have been compiled in recent years, they are not necessarily adequate to be called helpful for domain specified technical translation. On the other hand, in recent years, several methods and software for building practical small scale parallel corpora have been proposed along with the development of Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies.In this paper, the author makes an attempt to build a parallel corpus using the present alignment techniques and the electronic texts available in the IT field. The target IT English-Chinese Parallel Corpus (ITPC) contains about 5000 aligned sentence pairs at present. The corpus texts, mainly from the Internet, include textbooks, instruction books and bilingual essays in the IT field.This thesis first introduces briefly corpus linguistics and technical translation; and the structure of this paper; next reviews the theory of corpus linguistics for translation studies and practice, theory of technical translation study including technical terms and translation units, and the research questions of this thesis; after that discusses technical translation in the IT field, existing problems, solutions available now, and the proposal of ITPC; then discusses the tool, overall design and construction of the target corpus --- IT English-Chinese Parallel Corpus, with foci on annotation, paragraph and sentence alignments. Using this corpus, the author explores the application of ITPC in the resolution of problems mentioned above; the results show that ITPC has unique advantages in aiding IT technical translation that other translation tools can not offer; and then illustrates roughly other applications of ITPC. Finally the author concludes the whole paper; discusses the limitations of present research and suggestions for further research.This paper is an application paper, which realizes the design and construction of ITPC using alignment technique available and Perl language. As mentioned above, although many large-scale corpora have come into exist gradually recent years, those that can practically help technical translation are scarce. According to the search results of Google searching engine and the author’s investigation of corpus researches conducted by educational institutes, there is only one special parallel corpus available so far. And it is limited in the field of law. Until now, special parallel corpus in the IT field still remains in a state of vacuum.The emergence of ITPC fills this present void of special parallel corpus in the IT domain. This paper argues that ITPC can offer excellent aiding service to technical translation, bilingual education and work in the IT field. Comparing with other translation aiding tools, its function in aiding translation of IT terms and translation units is unmatchable. It also provides statistics to other text related studies at different level.
