Abstract

The development of criticism based on gnosis in nearly thirty years could be divided into two phases. The Phase I is from the end of the Great Cultural Revolution to the late 1980s. The Phase II is from 1990s to the present day.The criticism based on gnosis is a style of criticism, in which the critic used the method of intuitionally realizing to appreciate the literary output. The critic always interprets the literary output with his own life experience. According this, we can generalize the traits of the criticism based on gnosis. First, this criticism emphasizes the subject’s imagination and Aesthetic experience. Second, it contains intuitive illumination, imaginative association, and vivid words. Third, combines the perceptual appreciation with the rational analysis. Through these traits, we can found the reason why the criticism based on gnosis didn’t decline for a long time. This is because the influence of traditional cultural psychological which had become a cultural gene. This gene focuses Chinese people’s attention on the criticism based on gnosis with great passion. The cultural psychological is the spiritualize aesthetics that core is the emphasis on heart. Under this cultural psychological impacts, the criticism based on gnosis still sink deep into the hearts of the Chinese people after the one century’s modernization progress. Especially the nearly thirty years, the experience is more complicated.From the end of the Cultural Revolution to the late 1980s, because the literary circles brought order out of chaos, the criticism based on gnosis became the primary criticism in this period. This is result from the literary circles paying more attention to the criticism’s esthetic dimension. Anther hand, the ideological emancipation movement in the New Period made the human’s subjectivity become a hot topic. Neither the paying attention to the criticism’s esthetic dimension, nor the wilding about the human’s subjectivity, all these made the literary circles to chose the criticism based on gnosis. So the criticism based on gnosis recovered in the New Period is not strange. This situation is last until 1985. After 1985, the literary circles begun to advocate the scientific method. That must impacted on the criticism based on gnosis. For this situation, the criticism based on gnosis adjusted itself to fit.Into the 1990s, Social environment appeared great changes compared with the 1980s. This phase is the second development phase of the criticism based on gnosis. Market economy becomes the theme of the era, and the literature gradually lost its old style. Because this reason, the criticism based on gnosis was at a time when the downturn. The criticism based on gnosis survival between the collision of commercialized criticism and scholastic criticism. But the criticism based on gnosis didn’t die out. After a period of chaos, the literary circles begun to reflect the errors of contemporary literary criticism, and the criticism based on gnosis came back.Like the other literary criticism, the criticism based on gnosis also has many weak points. How to overcome its shortcoming and play a role in better, this is very important.
