Abstract


As the first generation sculptor of new China, Mr. Ma Gaihu studied USSR representational sculpture in his early years, mastered solid ability of modeling, he has created a number of works in different subjects, styles and materials during his 60s sculpture career, and produced extensive influence of society. The paper aims at studying and analyzing his art style in his compositions of different subjects in different periods, and tries to make an innate and objective study to the influenced sculptor in the history of sculpture.Mr. Ma Gaihu was born in Shaanxi Province, where Zhou, Qin, Han, Tang four Dynasties established their capitals. Shaanxi Province owns deep cultural tradition and abundant ancient Chinese sculpture heritage, he continuously absorbed the nutrition from the soil with unique local culture and enriched himself, which provided good base and source of theory for his later sculpture creation and the form of his art theory.After 30 years old, Mr. Ma Gaihu had been strongly interested in Chinese cultural art and traditional sculpture. He firmly established his sculpture creation theory through serious research and put these theories into his creation. From the conscientious modeling and representational style in his early composition Old Shepherd to having a foothold on culture and impressionistic style in his Silk Road sculpture, his representational and impressionistic style with well-defined characteristic of the time had established gradually.The paper starts with the sculpture style of Ma Gaihu and tries to make a complete, innate and objective study, expecting to provide some beneficial help for Chinese contemporary sculptor individual study.
