Pan Tianshou is a master of Chinese painting as well as an art educationist in modern China. He not only inherited and developed our national painting art with his strong will and originality, but also devoted all his life to the art education and trained quite a lot of national artist and art educationist. His art allegation and educational view exerted a great influence on the development of art education of China.Pan’s view is centered around man’s education, taking personality education as its trunk, learning accumulation as its underprop and originality as its driving force. It started to develop with the inheritance of national art. Its essence is the construction of national humanism. His art educational thought is the distillate of his art educational activities and art creation, and reflects his personality. In spite of the fact that the 20th century is an epoch in which the Western culture collided violently with the national one, Pan stood with his nation in the face of the western impact and gave a sensible analysis and thinking to the two cultural systems. He proposed to draw some distance between the Western painting and its Chinese counterpart prospectively. And sagaciously he chose to develop the national art from the inside of the Chinese painting. He held confirmedly to modernize the Chinese painting and the art education. Pan combined the humanism of the national art with the art creation, the essence of the traditional educational thought with modern educational system. Hence he found a road of sustained development of the teaching of the Chinese painting and succeeded in conversion from the traditional education to the modern one.The present art education is in its critical period in which the specialty-centered training is converting to the formation of man-centered humanism stress of humanistic caliber. We retake the study of Pan’s art educational thought and have no difficulty to find in it the essence of humanism which not only is related closely with that traditional cultural humanism, but is in line with the humanistic educational thought. Accordingly, in the critical time of the conversion of the art education, Pan’s art educational view will undoubtedly offer reference for the innovation of contemporary art education.
