Abstract

The auxiliary word has always been scholars’attention. There are lots of articles on“deng”and“deng deng”, although many of them focus on functions or three planes: Syntax, Semantic and Pragmatic. And only a few articles on“shenme de”. Also, you hardly see the articles on“deng”,“deng deng”and“shenme de”analysed by synthesis together.This article is a study on the analysis of“deng”,“deng deng”and“shenme de”. After taking in many scholars’theories, we attempt to observe and study these three words from different points, based on the contemporary Chinese corpus, so that we can get a in-depth knowledge about their distribution and function, crystallize their meanings and differences and distinguish their rules of occurrence and replacement selection. We really hope that this article does have some help to the traditional Chinese research and the teaching for foreigners.This article is divided into five parts.Chapter one gives an introduction of the background, the significance and the correlational research.Chapter two discusses the differences of these three words. They have different phonetic forms, which bears up on the selection of the words that follow closely these three words. That is to say, every sentence with“deng”or“shenme de”has got to contain X.“deng deng”can consist in those sentences without X, but NP following closely“deng deng”must appear in such sentences. Clauses can only consist in the sentences serving as X. You can’t find any punctuation between X and“deng”or“shenme de”, while a comma is easy to be found between X and“deng deng”. These three words can be used to express the meaning of enumeration, while only“shenme de”can be used to express the meaning of conjecture and uncertainty.Chapter three observes the rules of occurrence and replacement selection. Although these three words have some similar rules of occurrence, whether they can occur or not depends on definite sentences. These three words can replace each other freely in certain sentences, and sometimes replacement can’t be achieved due to the differences of conditions.Chapter four observes the factors of conducing selections and limits. Phonetic forms, semantic expressiveness, speakers, listeners and occasions can influence the selections and limits.Chapter five summarizes the full article and puts forward expectation.
