Abstract


Norman Mailer is considered to be one of the writers of World War II , the most politically oriented . His first novel, \Appears to be a war novels , but it is actually a novel of political tendencies . The description of the conflict between the U.S. military figures , Mailer predicted the development of post-war totalitarian tendencies . The novel is also concerned that the character development, character development through the rows of the investigation , a vivid performance of the mental state of the soldiers in the face of fear and death caused by the war , and even perverted state of mind , that animality and humanity in the character inner struggle . In this paper , three aspects of the work carried out analysis and research. The first chapter analyzes the contradiction between the main characters Huon lieutenant , General Cummings and Sergeant Croft , reflecting widespread in the armed forces of totalitarianism and liberalism conflict . The second chapter focuses on the character 's own discord . Cummings and Croft defeat the point of view compared to designate grace and Seoul where students experience , Mailer give a contrast of rough good and evil , but the characters' inner rational beast struggling dramatic of description . The third chapter discusses the human and nature of conflict in the war environment . Mailer story scene is set on the fictional island of the Philippines , the U.S. military is facing a lot of difficulties , such as the jungle heat , storms , and even the local topography . This makes a lot of people are facing the risk of life . Croft failure of the natural desire to control humans can not overcome the laws of nature .
