Abstract


With the rapid development of modern science and technology, internationalcontact is increasing frequently. English plays a more important role on internationalpolitics, economy, science and technology and cultural exchange etc. Learnersexpect to master English in a shorter time. Internationalization of every walk of lifebrings new challenges to college English teaching. Learners are not only required touse English in daily life, but also are required to engage in profession-related work.In order to make a joint between the requirement of society and college personneltraining and to cultivate more talents to be both proficient in profession and inlanguage, English for specific purpose entered into the view of language researchersand educators and has been carried out in several colleges. Hence, Chinese collegesset up ESP courses according to their own practical situation to adapt to the rapiddevelopment of social economy and the challenges of internationalization trend.ESP has been set up in southern and coastal part of China in recent years. Thequantity of colleges and universities in Shaanxi province ranks forefront in China.Shaanxi province is a significant educational province, universities of science andengineering have particular distinguishing features. In order to have a deepunderstanding on the current situations of ESP teaching in these universities ofShaanxi province, questionnaires and interviews were used in this research.Questionnaires were distributed to some students in three universities of science andtechnology in Shaanxi province, meanwhile, the author had interviews anddiscussions with students and teachers. The investigation mainly covered the generalbackground situation of ESP course, the teaching situation of ESP course and theactual teaching effects and existing problems of ESP course. The research findingsshowed: firstly, the general background situations of ESP in universities of scienceand technology of Shaanxi province were of varying quality, including ESP coveragerate, the start point of ESP course and durations of ESP curriculum; secondly, thecurrent ESP teaching model lacked of teaching methodology guidance andtraditional method was still occupying a dominant position. In ESP classes, reading and translation were the main content, students were not interested in ESP materialsetc; thirdly, the outcomes of ESP course were not obvious, but students still obtainedimprovements on reading and translation. ESP course was unattractive and languagefoundation of students was weak etc, these phenomena existed in ESP teaching atpresent stage. On the basis of findings, in order to get better implementation of ESPteaching, the author raised the following suggestions: firstly, optimization on theconstruction of ESP teaching staff; secondly, improvement on ESP teaching methods;thirdly, enhancement on the construction of ESP teaching materials.
