Project management is, with the initial goal of project construction, under the limited resources (investment, time, etc.) conditions, by using modern project management methods, through a series of safety management, cost control, schedule control, quality control and other activities, to achieve safety, cost, schedule, quality and other goals within required project duration.With the characteristics of strong comprehensiveness, high timing requirements, regional, and high risk, most modern projects are large-scale investment ones, with a long construction period and a tight relationship with people’s livelihood. Project management methods must be progressive and innovative to avoid sticking to conventions, deal with the complex project environment, and achieve goals at low cost and high efficiency.In this paper, the author based on principles and methods of modern project management, makes analysis on the modern project management theory, the development background, and research status and applications at home and abroad. This paper starts from the construction side of project management, researches the project implementation (construction) process in-depth, and analyzes the case of large-scale integrated municipal projects. Based on the applied research, the author is to explore and validate efficient management mode, try to maximize the integration of various resources to achieve safety, cost, schedule and quality goals in the required work period.According to the application of modern project management methods in the sample project, the author sums up the experience, problems and coping methods in project implementation process from the construction side and validates the effectiveness of the application of modern project management in projects. The advantages of application of modern project management methods lies in that it can break down the project reasonably and accurately, take effective management practices, integrate the parts of the target system as a whole, adjust holistically and dynamically, solve the difficulties encountered effectively and achieve the final goals. The improvement and development of modern project management methods and its application in the construction will serve the project construction better.
