Abstract

Paulo Freire(1921-1997),the famous Brazilian educator, reputed as one of the most influential educators in the second half of the 20th century, is also a typical representative of“The Oppressed Pedagogy”trend of thought. He experienced by himself the poorness and pungency of the oppressed, and deeply discerned that the oppression not only alienated man and distorted human nature, but hindered and restrained the perfecting procedure of humanity as well. His thought of education not only has affected the development of the educational theory and practice in the third world countries, but also exerted tremendous influence on the developed countries including the United States. Meanwhile, he also dedicated to practice and exploration, proposed to develop critical awareness of educational theory for the purpose of liberation. His practical exploration provides a solid foundation for its rich educational theory. For this reason,“he has become legendary in his era.”Aiming at the domesticating education, which was used by the oppressors to train the oppressed to adapt the reality, Freire put forward his famous ideology of liberating education. This ideology not only provides enlightenment for the oppressed in the subordinate positions in the world, but also supplies us a firmly theoretical means to criticize and reflect the educational theory and practice nowadays in China. He believes that education’s democracy and independence can exist only with political democracy and independence, thus a country must solve the problem of political independence and liberation first. Freire’s outstanding contribution is made to develop critical awareness of educational theory for the purpose of liberation, forming its own unique educational system. This aspect of education and teaching reform has far-reaching significance as well as a strong social and political significance. This paper analyzes the thought of the teachers on the basis of Freire’s liberation education, with a view to drawing lessons for the current reform concerning teacher education. This paper is divided into five parts. The introduction part presents the origins and significance of research situation at home and abroad and the research methods adopted. The first chapter is Paul Freire’s life and educational background. It selects the experiences which have some major impacts on Friere’s ideology of teachers from his childhood, study time and educational practice. Chapter two is about the view of concept of the teachers, and the essential quality of the teachers, such as love, tolerance, patience and courage. The third chapter is about Freire’s different views of teacher criticism and advocacy, discussing the“lecture-style teaching”,“saving education”,“teaching questions”and“liberation education view”. Freire’s liberation education is to make the oppressed have a clear understanding of the situation, resulting in awareness, asking questions, reflecting and taking action. What is used in the teaching process is to promote“teaching questions”or“dialogue style”instead of the traditional“lecture-style teaching”.The teacher’s view on the teaching methods and aims. It mainly discusses the dialogue, and how to train students of critical consciousness. Chapter four is evaluation and enlightenment. Through the analysis of the characteristics and other scholars’evaluation, this paper clarifies the inspiration to current reform of teacher education.
