Abstract


After tortuous development, translation has become a specialty or discipline. However, translation teaching practice goes without explicit teaching objectives and effective curriculum setting. Few translation teachers have been properly trained in translation teaching, and teaching methods and assessment need improvement. Through literature review, interviews, case study, classroom observation and questionnaires, this paper studies the mainfactors impeding effective professional translation teaching in universities and colleges. Thenbased on theoretical and practical research data, an effective translation teaching framework is suggested and analyzed. The present study reveals the following problems curbing the effective translation teaching: 1) Curriculum setting lacks explicit orientations and levels of talent-cultivating. 2) Teaching materials are more academic than professional and are outdated. 3) There are gaps between current teaching practice and students’ expectations or teachers’ self-evaluation. 4) Translation teaching is still teacher-oriented or textbook-oriented rather than learner-oriented or competence-oriented. 4) The teaching of professional translation technology lags behind the internet-era market requirements. 5) Students’ learning strategies and assessments should be improved in methods and tools. 6) Translation teachers lack effective professional improvements. To improve the effectiveness of current translation teaching, the author suggests the following steps: 1) Do market survey to have explicit teaching objectives and levels as criteria of setting curriculum and teaching syllabus. 2) Select textbooks, pedagogy and translation teachers. 3) Apply translation / interpretation-oriented teaching ideology with the aid of internet resources and multimedia equipment, and integrate the latest professional translation technology into teaching to enhance learning efficiency and enjoyments. 3) Diversify the methods and tools for testing and assessment should be. 4) Create more opportunities for students and teachers to make sustained progress through practice in real work by means of cooperation with enterprises and various ways.
