Abstract


This thesis is chiefly concerned with the generating mechanism of netspeak. Netspeak has come into being with the wide application of computer and quick development of internet. This new language form is popular among the young for its unique features of humor, creativeness and economy. The people, especially the young generation use this special language form as an aid for communication, and at the same time they coin new terms of netspeak. Although some terms of netspeak violate the traditional grammatical rules, they have still got involved in our daily communication, which has attracted many scholars’ attention. They have studied netspeak from the perspectives of sociolinguistics, lexicology, rhetoric, and cross-cultural communication and eventually made some profound insights into it. However, rarely can we find discussions on how netspeak is produced. Due to this reason, this thesis intends to explore the generating mechanism from the cognitive perspective, and tries to answer the question why netspeak can express the communicator’s true intention, or in other words, how this intention is realized and embodied in netspeak—an abnormal language form.This thesis aims to explore the generation of netspeak by applying Xu Shenghuan’s Autonomy-Dependency Analysis Framework and tries to provide a reasonable explanation for the generation of netspeak. Based on this theoretical framework and a quantitative and qualitative analysis of 1500 terms of netspeak , it is found that there is proximity and/or similarity relation between the terms of netspeak and their corresponding meanings. The terms of netspeak with proximity relation with their true meanings take up 28.93 percent, and that with similarity relation take up 48.14 percent and with proximity and similarity relation 22.93 percent. Due to proximity and similarity, netspeak is produced. They play significant roles in the generation process of netspeak. In addition, the generation of netspeak is influenced by netizens’ personalities, computer and internet. Based on the analysis, the thesis puts forward a framework of the generating mechanism of netspeak based on Xu Shenghuan’s framework. In summary, the thesis holds that the netspeak is generated in the following ways:(1) The generation of netspeak is motivated by netizens’ intentionality, especially the intentional attitude of expressing ideas in a novel and economical way.(2) Netizen’s intentional attitude is affected by netizens’ personalities and constraints of computer and internet, which motivate the intentionality of the production of netspeak.(3) Because of proximity and/or similarity relation between netspeak and netizen’s intention, netspeak can express netizens’ intention. Due to this relation, netspeak can be understood and widely used on the internet.(4) Not all the expressions derived by proximity and/or similarity and constraint of intentionality can be called netspeak. Only when the expressions are acknowledged and widely used by the majority of netizens can they be called netspeak.Based on the ways above, netspeak is eventually generated.Meanwhile, based on the data analysis, the thesis brings forth a new classification of netspeak from the cognitive perspective. It can be classified into three types: proximity-based type, similarity-based type and proximity-similarity-based type.In addition, limitations of this study and prospect for further research are included in the end of this thesis. As netspeak is changing over time, a large amount of new terms of netspeak will appear. Therefore, whether the new terms can be included in the three types of netspeak and whether this theoretical framework is applicable to the new terms need further study. However, this thesis will definitely provide a new perspective for the production of netspeak.
