Abstract

There is a special sentence structure " NP1+VP+NP2" in Contemporary Chinese. If we swap the NP1 with NP2, we will get the new structure "NP2+VP+NP1", and the semantic relationships among the elements remain unchanged. This kind of unusual and interesting sentence structure is called Reversible Sentence (RS). It has attracted many attention in Contemporary Chinese since the 1980s. Unfortunately, the researches of the Reversible Sentence are biased and separate. In view of this situation, this thesis includes the Reversible Sentence across the board. We try to analyze the confines and types of Reversible Sentence through the analysis of semantic relationship, and on this condition, we will probe into the cause of reversible.The motif of this thesis is that Reversible Sentence has been formed on account of the syntactic property. So it may include many kinds of semantic types, like "Caused-Reversible Sentence"," Existing-Reversible Sentence" and so on. All the verbs in the Reversible Sentence line up according to the Acting from weakness to strength. And there is a close relationship between this sequence and the Reversible-Possibility of a sentence. Therefore, What makes of the Reversible Sentence is the integration of the choice of topic, the neglect of the Acting of syntactic constructure, and the strictly limits of the syntactic structure.In the first chapter, we present the target, rationale and methods of the research and the theoretical and practical meanings of the topic. We end off by providing an overview of every chapter.In the second chapter, we summarize domestic scholars’points of view on definition of the Reversible Sentence and the description of the types and the cause of reversible, inclusive of Song Yuzhu (1991),RenYing (1999),limin (2008) and so on.In the third chapter, we define the limits of the Reversible Sentence and describe the different categories, we classify the Reversible Sentence into six categories according to the principle of "form-meaning matched ". These six categories are:Quantity-Matched RS, Function-Matched RS, Existing RS, Appear-Disappear RS, Caused RS, Suffering RS. And each category is classified into the subordinate categories according to the semantic relationships among NPi,VP and NP2.In the fourth chapter, we analyze the pragmatic property about Reversible Sentence, especially the stative focus and the topic bootstrapping.In the fifth chapter, we analyze the cause of reversible about all kinds of Reversible Sentence. Whether a sentence has the reversible-possibility depends on the coordination of pragmatic, semantic and syntactic. The pragmatic-drivers is essential and prime. What makes of the Reversible Sentence is the integration of the choice of topic, the neglect of the Acting of syntactic constructure, and the symmetry of the syntactic structure.In the sixth chapter, we draw the conclusion. We review and sum up the main points about this thesis.
