Exploring Cultural Fluency: An Investigation of Chinese-English Bilinguals with Residential Experiences in L2 Culture

Abstract


This paper is an exploratory study to investigate the degree of fluency with Anglo-American cultural immersion experience of Chinese-English bilingual culture. This raised the following basic assumptions: 1) Second Language, culture learning will change learners' cultural identity; 2) the attitude of the culture of the native culture and second language fluently bilingual culture, and one hundred percent of the culture fluency is impossible; 3) cultural fluency and cultural identity have a close relationship. This study will be bilingual in attitude on the specific problems of specific events roughly divided into both positive and negative, based on the above assumptions, that there are four typical cultural identity tendency, that is the single Native cultural tendencies, different cultures tendency, the tendency of bicultural and cultural marginalization, four tendencies showed varying degrees of cultural fluency, and thus constitutes a basic theoretical framework of this study. In this study, based on the above theoretical framework to take a combination of questionnaires and interviews, on 17 different levels of bilingual (identity as scholars, teachers, students, office workers, businessmen, etc., when traveling abroad, the average age of 31 years abroad time 1-23 years) cultural tendencies and fluency survey. Frequency calculation method of the survey data analysis, quantitative data, qualitative analysis, the results show that: 1) Second Language and cultural immersion bilingual difficult re-integration into the native culture, which also proved assumption that: hundred percent bicultural does not exist in the existing language and cultural learning conditions; 2) bilingual treatment of native culture and attitude of the target culture determines the tendency of its cultural identity, but also further reflected in its culture. high and low degree of fluency; 3) the level of the degree of cultural fluency is influenced by many factors, including language fluency, age, living abroad, the length of time abroad, returning the length of time, living abroad, frequency, etc.; 4) return of culture shock makes changes to maximize the cultural identity and showing bilingual cultural fluency, degree of cultural fluency level of indeed has a consistent relationship between changes in cultural identity, cultural identity largely determines a person's cultural fluency, cultural fluency precisely reflect the changes in the cultural identity; 5) cultural fluency determines the happiness index of second language learners, and may even affect their lives. Five points above the major findings and found revelation is our second language culture of learning and teaching: First, second language learners should be a solid grasp of the required knowledge, skills, attitudes of intercultural communicative competence (ICC), a keen awareness of the culture. \five dimensions; Second, to strengthen the ability to understand the native culture and the culture of the target language training, to enhance learners' sensitivity to cultural differences; Again, cultured the learners good language and culture learning philosophy and attitude, across from culture to culture beyond ; Finally, cultural identity, cultural fluency and cultural marginalization of the concept of the introduction of a second language culture teaching to help learners develop self-awareness in language learning, improve self-integration capabilities to achieve the best learning state.
