Abstract

Environmental endocrine disruptors are a series of chemical compounds in environment. It may affect human and wildlife on their normal endocrines; cause reproductive, developmental and behavioral disorder.Microfluidics is currently one of the most popular research fields. By taking advantages of the miniaturized microfluidic systems, conventional analytical methods and separation techniques are able to become more efficient. Microchip capillary electrophoresis (MCE) has been an important branch of micro-total analysis system. And Poly-(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microchip has great potential in constructing low-cost, disposable and multifunctional micro fluidic devices in stead of glass and quartz. The aim of the paper is to establish the efficient, sensitive microchip electrophoresis methods and apply to the separation of octylphenol, 4-nonylphenol and bisphenol A in wastewaters. The paper is composed of three parts:In the first part, the history of microchip capillary electrophoresis technology was reviewed, and the fundamental theory and detectors of MCE were introduced. At the same time, we narrated the present development hotspots of MCE in detail, as well as the goal and significance of this paper. In the second part, a laboratory-built PDMS microchip with amperometric detection was developed for the simultaneous determination of two phenolic environmental estrogens (bisphenol A, 4-nonylphenol). To obtain the best separation efficiency, the experimental parameters such as buffer type, concentration of additives, pH, detection potential, etc. were carried out a detailed investigation. It was found that bisphenol A, 4-nonylphenol were well separated within 55 s in mixed buffer solution (12.5mM boric acid-borax, 20.0mM SDS, 5.0mMβ-CD, pH8.0). The detection limit was 2.0μg/L for bisphenol A, 4.0μg/L for 4-nonylphenol. The protocol was successfully applied for the determination of the analytes in industrial wastewater. Recovery results ranged from 90.2% to 107.7%.In the third part, the laboratory-built PDMS microchip with amperometric detection was developed for the simultaneous determination of three phenolic environmental estrogens (octylphenol, 4-nonylphenol and bisphenol A,).We optimized the separation parameters to obtain the optimal experimental conditions. It was found that octylphenol; 4-nonylphenol and bisphenol A were well separated within 55 s in mixed buffer solution (12.5mM boric acid-borax, 17.0mM SDS, 5.0mMβ-CD, pH8.0). The detection limit was 3.0μg/L for bisphenol A, 4.0μg/L for 4-nonylphenol and 5.0μg/L for octylphenol. The protocol was successfully applied for the analysis of the analytes in industrial and food wastewater. Recovery results ranged from 91.6 to 109.4%.
