Abstract

Objective To investigate the expressions of HMGB1 and RAGE in AAA and the role they play in the development and rupture of AAA.Methods The protein expression of HMGB1 and RAGE in 42 specimens of AAA and 10 specimens of normal abdominal aorta tissue were measured by immunohistochemistry. The 42 specimens of AAA contained 9 cases of small AAA,15 moderate AAA,6 large AAA and 12 ruptured AAA (RAAA).Results The positive expression rates of HMGB1 and RAGE in AAA were significantly higher than those in normal abdominal aorta tissues (χ2=15.61; 13.37, P< 0.01). The positive rate of RAGE in large and moderate AAA was higher than that in small AAA (x2=6.075, P<0.05). Also, the positive rate of RAGE in large AAA and RAAA was higher than that in small and moderate AAA (x2= 4.978, P<0.05). Additionally, there was no difference of HMGB1 expression in different size AAA and RAAA tissues. No correlation between the expressions of HMGB1 and RAGE was found in this study (r=0.189.P>0.05).Conclusion Both HMGB1 and RAGE may be involved in the pathogenesis and progression of AAA. Especially, RAGE may have close relationship with the development and rupture of AAA. However, the underlying mechanisms are yet to be studied.
