Abstract


Ernest Hemingway is one of the most famous novelists in the history of western literature, a remarkable stylist and the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. A Farewell to Arms is his representative work in his early literary career.This thesis focuses on Hemingway’s famous novel- A Farewell to Arms, mainly analyses the journey of Frederic Henry- the protagonist of this novel. Firstly, the thesis analyses the main character in the novel- Henry, and discusses the Hemingway’s creation of Henry, Henry’s complex personality and his different identities in the whole novel. Secondly, the journey of Henry will be analyzed from three steps: Henry’s innocence in the first participation in war; Henry experiences the essence of love and war and his final maturity. In addition, the arrangement of the tragic ending and its significance will be discussed. The tragic ending meets the requirements of the plot. Furthermore, it embodies and explores the tough personality of mature Henry, pessimism of Hemingway and the social environment.Hence one can see that Henry’s journey is not only a mental maturing process of him, but also represents a journey which a special generation had experienced.
