Abstract


School Songs were born in the specific historical context in China in the beginning 20th century. They are the natural result of“Westernization Movement”and“Hundred Days Reform”in China, and symbolize the strong idea to“prosper the country and strengthen the army”. As an important part of the“New Knowledge”in that period, School Songs have played a crucial role in the training of“new talents”. On the other hand, School Songs spread to then Chinese army, and greatly encouraged soldiers’morale and combat spirit. As a result, School Songs are critical and influential for the enlightenment of the public and the enhancement of the idea to“prosper the country and strengthen the army”. Which makes them most valuable is that School Songs spread and enhanced the idea to“prosper the country and strengthen the army”under a specific historical context, which shows the strategic intention of“cultural defense”. As the key ideological subject for Schools Songs, the idea to“prosper the country and strengthen the army”played an important role in then China’s national education and military reform. Moreover, the idea also enlightens China’s contemporary national defense education and the ideological and political work in the army. As one form of China’s earliest new music, School Songs are the consequence of the communication between Chinese and Western music in that period, and the idea to“prosper the country and strengthen the army”is obviously a convincible proof for the belief that“School Songs are not the product of Western colonial culture”.
