Abstract


Self- esteem as a whole body multi-level multi-dimensional structure of one specific part of self-esteem , self-esteem research in recent years has become a hot issue . Physical self-esteem and social evaluation is closely related to the individual's self- satisfaction with different aspects of the body , or a sense of dissatisfaction , it is closely related to physical self- concept , social comparison study shows the importance of physical self-esteem is one of the factors . However, in view of the physical self-esteem research is still in the exploratory stage , the lack of social comparison in-depth study of the mechanism of action . In this study, experimental method, in Political Science 160 female graduate students for the study, analyzed the social comparison on physical self-esteem and overall self-esteem of the mechanism of action of the body while exploring the relationship between self-esteem and overall self-esteem . Research found that: ( 1 ) social comparison on physical self-esteem and overall self-esteem influence is significant , and the mass media to compare the ideal image of women will reduce the individual's physical self-esteem and overall self-esteem ; more specifically, in the upward social comparison , the individual goals and compare the similarity between the assimilation of physical self-esteem were more likely to improve the level and overall self-esteem ; conducted comparative differences in the body will reduce the level of self-esteem and overall self-esteem . ( 2 ) mass media widely publicized in the media, thin is beautiful imagery will reduce the individual level of physical self-esteem and overall self-esteem , but this negative effect on the body and face of media imagery between the two groups there was no significant difference . ( 3 ) physical self-esteem and overall self-esteem changes synchronized, this consistency of change is not causation.
