Intuition and Literary Ethics: Dialogue between Zhu Guangqian and B.Croce

Abstract


B.Croce, a western esthetician who had great influence in the esthetics of China in the 20th century, affected directly estheticians like Zhu-Guangqian, Lin -Yutang, Deng-Yizhe etc. In particular, he contributed a lot to Zhu’s theory innovation. Therefore, it should be a novel but rather difficult task to research on B.Croce’s thought evolution and development in ChinaThis thesis focuses on the relationship between Zhu’s esthetic ideology and B.Croce’s. The writer choose two starting points: intuitivism and literature ethetics, and do research from 3 perspectives:an overview of B.Croce’s esthetic ideology, Zhu’s acceptance and surpass of B.Croce, the feature of Zhu’s esthetics.Among the realated thesis and works on contrast between B.Croce and Zhu-Guangqian by domestic scholars, most of the writers hold that Zhu formed his thought of Pure esthetics under the influence of B.Croce, so they separate Zhu’s "theory of life" and "esthetic ideology" while doing analysis. However, I think Zhu’s starting point is life esthetics, an esthetics based on life, concerning life and trying to improve life by esthetic means. To Zhu-Guangqian, esthetics exists in forms of means and ways. The value and meaning of modern esthetics lies in treating esthetic matters correctly, knowing them completely and thus beauty life and transform human minds through esthetic activities. This is what I am going to emphasize in this passage, and it also shows the uniqueness of Zhu’s esthetic ideology.To link life and esthetics is in fact to analyze art in the background of life, and in turn analyze life through the perspective of art. Former artists deny art while talking about art in life. And they neglect the humanistic characteristics of art while talking about art alone. Actually, Zhu’s esthetic system starts from human, based on human sensitivity. He extended human activities and esthetic activities to the level of social facts, and then to social practice, by which the status and function of human activities in material production in esthetic activities are fully recognized,thus building an esthetic system combining psychology, sociology art together. B.Croce, an artist who perceives esthetics in an independent level, also studies it by returning it to its origin of humanism. Zhu inherited B.Croce mentally, which is an acceptance of intuitivism. What worth mentioning is that Zhu furthered B.Croce’s esthetics on the mental level of humans? Zhu’s esthetics is on the level of whole human life, including mental life and material life. So we should say Zhu’s life is and esthetic ideology combining closely art and life, fully displaying the humanistic feature of art.The passage has 2 study purposes. First, to research from an aspect of life esthetics the feature in how Zhu create his own theory system while absorbing B.Croce’s thoughts. Second, to propose the re introduction of B.Croce’s poetic spirit in Chinese academic field, especially in art sphere; emphasizing the displaying of humanity through human creative mental activities. If the first is the statement of this passage, the second is its basis.Seen from the whole passage, I tried to seek the origin of Zhu’s life esthetics through B.Croce, and research by comparing they two, undercover the unique value of Zhu’s life esthetic ideology. Besides, I also analysis Zhu’s historical contribution in the aspect of Chinese esthetic history. Through the analysis, I state my opinion that Zhu’s life esthetics represents the humanistic spirit in contemporary and modern world since Renaissance. This brings us a colorful feature of B.Croce’s humanism in Chinese real life.
