Abstract


Since the 1950s, with the rise of mass tourism, tourism has been increasingly becoming an economic phenomenon of global significance. The international tourism which once was just a minor industry has become world’s important industry of today. Since China took the road of Reform and Opening up Policy, the status of tourism industry in China’s national economy has been so important that both the state and local governments of all level take the development of tourism as a new economic growth point. The tourism industry has become an essential factor to promote socio-economic development.Industrial cluster, which has played an increasingly important role in enhancing regional competitiveness of promoting economic development since the 1980’s,is a worldwide economic phenomenon and has become the trend of international industrial development in the 21st century. With the accelerating process of global economic integration, the scope for competition of tourism market becomes wider and wider, and the level more and more intense. As we all know, there are quite a lot of advantages in tourism cluster formation. First of all, the integration will achieve economies of scale thus reducing the operational costs and enhancing competitiveness. Secondly, it also promotes technological innovation which will in time benefits us a lot in competitive advantage of differences in access. Thirdly, it will help to share tourism resources and form regional tourism brand. Besides, Industrial cluster of tourism is conducive to concentrating the capital and expanding the scale of the industry as well. Therefore, many domestic tourism industry clusters are developed to enhance the competitiveness of the regional tourism industry.Jimei, one of six promising districts of Xiamen City, has entered a new stage in economic and social development after years of development and construction. Jimei is well known as the hometown of Tan Kah Kee’, who contributed all his life and money to the education cause of Jimei in the 1910s,and it is also famous as hometown of many overseas Chinese, who are inspired by Tan Kah Kee’ spirit afterwards. In addition, Jimei is a quiet town with beautiful scenery. As an important center city of west side of the Taiwan Straits, Xiamen has accelerated the pace of urban construction in recent years and meanwhile, The Expo Garden, Xinglin Bridge, Jimei Bridge, Xiamen Railway Station, and some other key national or provincial projects, have been put into construction in Jimei, Based on this, to accelerate the development of tourism is an important measure in optimizating and upgrading industrial structure of Jimei tourism, which brings new opportunities to the development of rapid urbanization of Jimei .However, due to historical reasons, the basis for the development of the tourism industry in Jimei is still relatively weak andthere are some obvious restricted factors awaiting us to solve.In this paper, I analyze the current advantages and disadvantages in the development of Jimei tourism, with opportunity and challenges coexisting. In light of the conclusion on tourism industry cluster of current scholars, I do hope the ideas or strategies I put forward here can be of some use for Jimei tourism development.
